Surround Yourself With Excellence (Part 5, Key 4)

This week, I continue with my 6-part feature blog post on the 5 mindset keys which have made a HUGE difference in my business and directly impacted my business success. (Missed Part 4? Read it here!)

In Part 5, I focus on Key #4; this key has enabled me to have some of the biggest breakthroughs in my business, and each breakthrough has resulted in an increase in my turnover, so have a read!

One of the most important things you can do to enhance your business is to find mentors. I believe that as business owners and entrepreneurs, all of us should surround ourselves with excellent mentors.

Pick mentors who have diverse experience and backgrounds so that you can maximise your learning experiences. You may have one, you may have two, or you may have three. Think about those business owners and entrepreneurs who have already done what you are doing, and are where you want to be from a business perspective. It is essential to learn from those who are where you want to be.

The best mentors will help you learn and grow by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with you. You will also benefit from their experience without having to suffer the consequences of gaining that experience firsthand. In other words, you can learn from their mis-steps. Imagine the number of things they may have tried that did not work. A good mentor will be able to tell you about these in advance, saving you the time of trying something that won’t work.

You can also learn from a mentor by modelling their actions. Successful people are successful for a reason. By modelling, you can try to identify what they have done to create their success.

Modelling doesn’t really work like a pick-and-mix strategy, though. If you want the same results that your mentor achieved, you’ll need to do the same things that worked for them. You can – and should – add your own personal touches, but don’t try to change the model.

You can break down the strategy you’re modelling into smaller steps. For example, if your mentor has become successful by following 12 specific steps, then those are the steps you must follow. Don’t copy the model but then think, “Actually, I will drop step number nine.” That won’t work. When you model, use the strategy from A to Z, the way your mentor did. Personalise it and add your own touches, but keep the model.

To make the most of your mentoring experiences, you need to be 100% committed to surrounding yourself with excellence. To fully model excellence you need face to face opportunities, which will give you the most value for your time. I flew 5,000 miles to be mentored by someone I had been admiring for some time. That is my level of commitment. If you commit 100%, it will be worth every bit of the time, energy and money you put into it.

Your mentors will become part of your support team, and having the best people on your team can definitely take your business to the next level. Make a list of people who you want as mentors. Once you have your list, only two things are left. You need to ask them to mentor you. You need to approach them. But before asking, you first need to be bold. Remember this quote, “Boldness is rewarded.”

If they say no, it’s because it is not meant to be.

But if you don’t ask, they will never know you want them as mentors. So be bold and ask. There is no limit to the benefits you can gain from your mentors.

Stay tuned for next week’s post which will focus on Key #5!

Until next time! ;-)

Both my blog and my newsletters are updated weekly, but the newsletters are VERY different; while I use my blog to share some information about a particular aspect of mindset, in my newsletters, I go the extra mile!!!

The newsletters are more personal and not at all like the blog, insofar as the tone. With the newsletters, you also get an inside view on my business life, mindset articles, weekly challenges, mindset success stories and more!

If you’re happy with the blog, stick with it. Otherwise, I really want you to consider this free newsletter.
